Luigi’s spooky debut
Released alongside the GameCube in 2001, Luigi’s Mansion marked Luigi’s first solo adventure. Set in a mysterious, haunted mansion, Luigi is tasked with rescuing his brother Mario, who has been captured by ghosts. With only a vacuum-like device, the Poltergust 3000, Luigi must explore the mansion, solve puzzles, and capture spirits. The game’s light-hearted take on the horror genre made it a unique and entertaining experience.
A blend of charm and challenge
While the mansion is dark and eerie, Luigi’s Mansion maintains a sense of whimsy, thanks to Luigi’s nervous yet determined personality. The gameplay revolves around using the Poltergust to suck up ghosts, which requires careful strategy and timing. Players also solve environmental puzzles to progress through the various rooms. The balance between action, puzzle-solving, and exploration was refreshing, offering an adventure that was both fun and spooky without being overly frightening.
A memorable and atmospheric game
Luigi’s Mansion was praised for its charming atmosphere, unique concept, and engaging gameplay. Though it was a departure from the more traditional Mario titles, it quickly became a fan favourite and remains one of the standout GameCube titles. Its mix of humour, light-hearted scares, and creative use of the GameCube’s capabilities made it a standout, and Luigi’s ghost-hunting adventure paved the way for more Luigi-centric games in the years to come.
