A fresh take on a classic Yoshi adventure
Yoshi’s New Island for the 3DS brings a fresh twist to the beloved Yoshi series. Released in 2014, this platformer continues the story of Baby Mario and Yoshi, with Yoshi navigating colourful, whimsical landscapes to rescue Baby Mario from the clutches of Kamek. While the game retains the series’ iconic egg-throwing mechanics, it introduces new gameplay elements, such as the ability to transform Yoshi into various vehicles, adding depth and variety to the experience.
Stunning visuals and a nostalgic feel
The visual design of Yoshi’s New Island is a notable highlight, with its vibrant, hand-drawn art style that captures the spirit of the original Yoshi’s Island on the SNES while utilising the 3DS’s 3D capabilities to bring the environments to life. The game’s music and sound design also stand out, crafted by T’s MUSIC and Arzest Corp. to evoke the familiar charm of Yoshi’s adventures. The combination of updated visuals, solid platforming, and nostalgic elements made it a hit with fans of the original and newcomers alike.
A global release with different timing
While Yoshi’s New Island arrived on the same day in the UK and the US, Japan saw a later release in July 2014. Despite this, the game was well-received in all regions, offering a familiar yet fresh experience for Yoshi fans. The game balanced classic Yoshi gameplay with new features, making it a standout title on the 3DS and a perfect pick for those looking for fun, family-friendly platforming action.
