A charming yarn-crafted adventure
Yoshi’s Woolly World for the Wii U wrapped the beloved green dinosaur in a cosy, handcrafted world. Released in 2015, this game took inspiration from Kirby’s Epic Yarn, with a stunning visual style made entirely of fabric, wool, and buttons. Instead of swallowing enemies, Yoshi unraveled them, turning them into balls of yarn to toss at obstacles and foes. The game’s soft, pastel aesthetic was more than just a gimmick—it played into the level design, with platforms unravelling, stitches pulling apart, and secrets hidden in the fabric itself.
A relaxed yet rewarding platformer
Unlike traditional Yoshi’s Island games, this one dropped the time limit and the stress of protecting Baby Mario. It offered a more laid-back experience, but still included tricky collectibles for those who wanted a challenge. Finding all the hidden Wonder Wools in each level unlocked new Yoshi patterns, ranging from cute designs to references from other Nintendo franchises. The co-op mode also let two players explore together, making it a great choice for multiplayer fun.
Amiibo integration and lasting appeal
Woolly World made excellent use of Amiibo, unlocking unique Yoshi designs based on different Nintendo characters. A special Yarn Yoshi Amiibo, made of actual fabric, was also released alongside the game. Though it later received a 3DS port (Poochy & Yoshi’s Woolly World), the Wii U version remains the definitive way to experience this beautifully crafted adventure on the big screen.
