Originally launched as a celebration across social media, 40 Formats in 40 Days is a deep dive into Super Mario’s incredible journey through gaming history. Each day, in honour of Mario’s 40th anniversary, I spotlighted one unique way Mario made his way into players’ homes — from rare 5.25” disks and forgotten home computers, to beloved consoles and quirky ports you never knew existed.
For the purists amongst you, you’ll know that Mario’s first appearance was actually in Donkey Kong on 9th July, 1981. However, Nintendo has chosen to “officially” mark the occasion in September 1985, aligning it with the Famicom launch of the seminal Super Mario Bros.
